DAY 11 – 12 DAYS OF GIVEAWAYS 2024 – TAKING TURNS

Welcome to my annual 12 DAYS OF GIVEAWAYS! 

If you’re new to this – here’s how it works:

1.   Each day from December 1 through December 12 I will put up a new giveaway HERE on my website with instructions on how to enter, a detailed description of the prize, and some stuff about the book or series. Each giveaway is different and each has ONE WINNER. MY GIVEAWAYS ARE ALWAYS OPEN INTERNATIONAL 

2.   Each giveaway runs UNTIL DECEMBER 13.

3.   Winners are CHOSEN and NOTIFIED on December 14. I will be notifying winners USING THE EMAIL USED TO COMMENT ON THIS BLOG – and all winners will BE LISTED AT THE TOP OF EACH GIVEAWAY POST HERE ON MY WEBSITE on December 14.

4.   Winners have 24 hours to respond, then another winner will be chosen.

5.   ALL PRIZES WILL BE MAILED ON DECEMBER 15.  If I’m waiting on a winner to respond and they miss the December 15 mail date, that prize will be mailed when I get around to it. I live in the middle of nowhere so a trip to the post office is a “thing” for me. 🙂 So make sure you’re checking for winners on the 14th.

6.   I will send newsletters announcing giveaways on December 1, December 6, December 12, and a Winner newsletter on December 14. I NEVER send this many newsletters in a month so sorry if that feels spammy.

MY ANSWER

Well, as an author I like the sexy covers because they always sell better. lol Take this series, for instance. These covers are hot. The first one for Taking Turns was a special photoshoot – Sara Eirew did that cover just for me. And I love it. I doubt I will ever take those people off that cover. 

But as a reader, I gotta say, I do not pick covers with photos on them to read. I only choose high-concept. But again, I read SF and Romantasy, so it’s different.

    1. I love ALL your covers! I’m always impressed. I like the high-concept better. I can use my imagination for the characters myself. I mean, I will not pass a book up because it has a sexy cover, but I can honestly say when I am looking for something new or in a slump and scrolling books, I have just kept scrolling because it is all abs and shit on a cover.

  30. Never judge a book by its cover. But I do. I prefer a discreet cover. Mostly so that I create in my head what the character looks like based on the authors description and not committing to what they look like on the cover.

  51. Generally speaking I read ebooks, so I don’t see the covers except for when I buy and start the book. They do not influence whether I buy a book either, I always buy based on the blurb and the reviews. That said I do like the sexy covers!

  59. So if I want a physical copy of a book, I generally go for the discrete covers. There’s nothing wrong with the model covers at all but I just like the look of the discrete better. If it’s a cover on an ebook, I don’t have a preference but model covers tend to grab my attention more since I’m very much a “judge a book by its cover” kind of person

  66. I love sexy covers! But I also like somewhat discreet covers. I don’t want the. Just plain. I want something related to the story, eye catching, beautiful! I don’t usually choose books based on covers. Funnily enough I never read the description either. I usually just go with the title and author, or recommendations. I have a habit of falling into a rabbit hole. Going from series to series then finding something that is similar, or that authors or other readers recs. I’m not gonna lie though, those sexy covers or pretty covers will catch my eye and can lead to me reading it. I also love to do ARC and Beta reading. So when I can get into those groups I binge read all that author when I can. So basically, as long as it’s beautiful, not a plain cover, I’ll love it.

  90. I can honestly say I don’t prefer one over the other, and I don’t think much about this discussion topic, although I see this exact question asked in lots of author and blogger groups. To me, it is more about if my eye is attracted to the cover. I’ve seen a lot of sexy bare chest covers, but the guy’s face turns me off and/or I’m not attracted to them. I think that’s why sometimes you see the sexy bare chest but the model’s face has been cropped out of the picture. And I must say, the fantasy world does the most gorgeous high concept covers I have ever seen! But I don’t read a lot of fantasy so I don’t collect those covers even when I drool over them.

  102. I do really like “high concept” covers, but the type of cover doesn’t influence my reading choice at all, as I primarily read digitally. A great blurb is what draws me in, unless it’s a favorite author. Anything you write will be an automatic read!

  153. I VERY rarely enjoy people at all on covers because I don’t want it to taint my imagination. I also find that if I’m reading a discrete high concept cover it draws the eye more and because it’s not obviously a “sex book”. This gives me more opportunity to talk about what I’m reading to more people and I think they are prettier to display on my book shelf.

  156. I’m good with either as long as it is connected to the story. For example, don’t tell me the story is about a plus-size character and put a thin model on the cover. I love the discreet covers that have things relating to the story hidden in it. Covers are important to me. I’m totally judging the book based on the cover.

  164. I think the broody Mister covers are my favorite type. I’m not a fan of the shirtless covers or boddess rippers. I also like the discreet covers that give a little insight to the characters. I have a tendency to buy a book by the cover.

But bc of that cheesiness, I think I prefer like a mid to low concept cover art. I don’t really want to know what the book is about by just looking at the cover. I need the cover to intrigue me so I flip it over and read the back or open it to read a few pages 🙂

    1. I read on a kindle so I don’t worry abbot what other people will think about my book covers. Personally I prefer the man covers. I have given my son directions on what to do with my kindle if something happens to me!

Ever since Lottie, my sweet little 7 year old granddaughter told Myles my bashful 3 year old grandson to put nannies smut book down, she then finished with, you have to be really old to read that, so maybe not so sweet, but very honest

  202. I have to say many covers I get drawn to and they’re all different. Something will capture my interest and I’m never sure exactly what lol. This cover is wow so amazing. Sometimes it’s just the Color and I then read the back of course. The only ones I seem to avoid most of the time are the cartoonish covers. The only time I pick those up to look at is if someone recommends the book to me but I never choose them myself. Sexy covers are usually authors I’ve heard of but I love one that’s different! I guess that’s not very specific lol but thank you so very much for asking all your thought provoking questions. I love thinking about my answers to these questions and you’re so amazing to do this for your readers 💙❤️💜📚🎄

Yes I can keep a straight face in public, and if I have to I will hide the cover for the innocent, but if you don’t want to know what I am reading then keep your nose out of my business!!

    However; I am a digital girlie so covers on books really don’t matter to me expect for my “trophy shelf”, but if I was a physical copy, then my rule above applies.

  204. My steady dose of romance novels comes mainly in audio format. So, I admit I do love me a hot AF cover. And of all the books I’ve listened to, Turning Back definitely has the most sizzling hot cover! And coincidentally 😁 it happens to be my most listened-to book. That said, the few physical romance books I have happen to have more discreet covers — not floral, or anything, but for example, a fully dressed hot guy… one thing I don’t love is the cutesy cartoony covers that have become so popular (mainly with romcoms). But, it seems to me that there’s no point having a discreet cover if the title of the book basically gives it away as a spicy romance.

I love male model covers all day long. it is rare that I find a discreet cover that I love only two authors have been able to pull it off where I have actually went out on purpose and bought the discreet covers and that was Maggie Cole’s Carnal discreet cover and Kylie Kent’s RARE Edition Hardcover. Sexy without showing skin. If I am reading a zombie story, yeah I don’t want to see skin LOL. I like the hot guy on the cover, but it doesn’t make me buy that book. It is the story within the cover that does it for me.

    For you, every cover you do, whether it’s with a guy, couple or discreet high concept, is TRULY a piece of art. Since I know you design all your own covers, I usually stare at everycover for a while looking at all the details that lead to hints for what’s to come inside the story. Do you sell a collection of stickers of all your books so I can create my own collage to frame? I can’t afford all the books, but even that wouldn’t showcase your artwork, and your covers are worth displaying!

For me the discreet cover needs to represent what the book is about maybe a scenery even a artist rendition of the characters. For my covers with models on them, I love for them to represent the vibe to the book meaning if it’s a happy cheery book I wanted to have more color and if it’s a dark book I wanted to be more dark and maybe even sexy. As long as characters on the cover match the character inside the book. I’m a paperback girl so I really do determine which book I’m going to get based on the cover.

Now that I’m more seasoned, I still pick discreet if possible if I’ll be reading in public, but now it’s so less people will interrupt my reading. If it’s on my tablet, I don’t have a preference. Both can grab my attention if done well.

  396. I’ve listened to over 500 audiobooks at this point and I still do look at the covers even if it’s just whatever Audible is putting up with the book. I have found which authors are my favorites and it really doesn’t matter what the cover is because I’m going to buy the book most likely sight unseen as far as the cover is concerned. Having said that, I am enjoying the concept covers a lot. Those are fun.
    I did make a mistake the other day of looking up a cover model on Instagram because they posted a picture of themselves with their book cover.. This wasn’t the first time I rapidly lost brain cells before hitting the unfollow button. While I’m sure not all of them are disappointing, the two that I have looked up have reminded me not to I do that. Like… Ever.

  418. I like both and don’t think the cover sways me a ton. I’ve bought a lot of very plain covers and some of the best-written romance books have come in a plain wrapper. I think steamy covers can say that the author is well-established and has the money to spend on beefcake or the author sucks and is banking it all on the cover. Price and summary teaser do more for me. If a book write up doesn’t have enough there or it sounds too common, I’m likely to skip over it in a sale. I typically only pay full price for authors I follow or a series/collection I’m already reading. I appreciate when an author hooks me in a collection by offering the first one or two on sale. I’ll read it and if I have to have the next one and it’s not on sale, I spend an audible credit or pay full price. The covers can be a nice selling point and may draw my eyes, but they don’t drive my decision. I have always loved your covers though and as a teacher, I think it’s super cool that you design your own covers. Pretty Things is one of my favorites and the Mr. series covers. The Rumble and the Glory cover bugged me enough to delay reading it until I had a little vacation time – it was a very complex cover and so different from your usual that I was intrigued by all the hidden meanings in the pieces. Most covers have only one or two symbolic items, but those are a visual overload that you can only value fully once the book is read. I appreciate that because it’s part of the puzzle and the suspense.

    1)I love the art aspect, and the little hints/Easter eggs that some authors place on the covers.
    2) It makes it easier to recommend & remember your favorite books. I can tell someone “I like the series with the skulls on the cover, I can’t remember the name, but its by one of these 3 athors” or “The ones with hands and stars”. You can’t really say “The one with the half naked guy” or “The one with the guy and the girl”. It’s possible I just read too many books as well though 😆.
    3)Discretion while in public or around kids. It’s a bit inappropriate to be holding up a book with naked chests and happy trails at your kids school event, or in a waiting room with children running around.
    I do love the sexy pictures, just not on the outside cover. 🥰

  512. It really depends. I like the sexy covers for sure and sometimes that’s what will draw me to a book. But in all honesty, if I’m going to buy a physical book I want discreet and really like the special edition ones. Romance books are a different breed and discreet doesn’t always fit.

  516. I love sexy for my ebooks, but not for my paper books. If I am taking them out in public, I do not want to advertise what I am reading. I am the same with my sci-fi and fantasy books. I don’t want people trying to strike up conversations with me while I am reading, so for paper book covers, discreet is better. Less is more. It is no one else’s business. No wow he’s built, or that’s a cool looking dragon, or is his skin blue, or why is there two men and only one woman?

  552. I absolutely love a sexy AF cover, especially if it’s someone I already follow. However if I’m not into the cover model then I don’t mind a discrete cover as long as the quality is there. Too many times I see a cover that has an ugly background or cheesy look to it and it throws me off. I know they say don’t judge a book by its cover but if the quality isn’t there to pull you in, why would I bother reading any further.

  557. I read on my kindle or on the kindle app on my phone so to be honest I don’t pay a lot of attention to a book’s cover. I just dive into the story.
    Some covers catch my eye, but I really can’t point to one thing that gets my attention. It’s just the ‘it’ factor. I’m sorry I know that’s not helpful.
    If I were reading paperbacks I would probably choose the covers with people on them if they conveyed emotion. However, I’d slip a book cover on them so people couldn’t see what I am reading.

  567. I honestly don’t have a preference. I love both as long as they’re done well. I should note that I’ve always loved art. I have a degree in art history. I live with my partner of 31 years; he’s a professional artist. I’m surrounded by art. I look at everything as “art”. As far as book covers go, it all comes down to what attracts me, and that can simply be a hot AF guy or it can be something more discreet that perhaps holds mystery and intrigue. Both can be appealing for different reasons. Although I appreciate all of your covers, and the time and effort you put into them, if it’s your book, Julie, I’m buying it, no matter what. 😊 This was the first series of yours that I ever listened to and it’s so hot and erotic!! 🔥🔥🔥 I love it!!   591. It’s complicated… lol! I often will look at a books details if it has hot body images on it, because that often means they are the kind of hot and steamy books I most often like to read. Good ol Marketing at its best! But since I also read romantasy books, I really appreciate high concept covers too and will also double take those books. Overall, I think I honestly prefer the high concept covers, but end up buying more with body images due to the content matching what I’m looking for.
