This was before Metallica made metal cool. Before Sons of Anarchy made the cut romantic. This was boots, and flannels, and chips on shoulders the size of the recession. I was a kid seeing things my brain wasn’t old enough to file correctly.

Men who would die for each other on Monday and beat each other bloody by Friday. Women who stayed. Not because it was romantic. Because they had kids, and nowhere else to go, and love looks different when you’re poor.

That’s not a love story. That’s a Tuesday.

And I didn’t want to write a Tuesday.

So I didn’t. For years. Because every time I tried, it came out too real and not enough romance and honestly? I didn’t know how to make it hot without making it a lie.

Then I figured it out.

I took that Lake Erie cold and transplanted it into 110-degree Montana badlands where the land itself looks like it’s been tortured.

Territory so brutal it has its own mythology.

I took one of those rust-belt boys with nothing—and I mean NOTHING, this man walks out of prison with twenty-seven dollars—and I dropped him into a world with LESS than nothing.
