People keep asking me about Story Fodder.
Specifically: “JA, is this the darkest thing you’ve written?”
And I have to lol. Because mo-fos. MO-FOS. Let me take you on a little journey through my backlist…
Dark ménage with a ‘throw-your-kindle-ending’ back when that was literally not a thing. I wrote this in 2015 and Goodreads acted like I’d invented a new crime. Two men. One woman. Absolutely zero apologies. You’re welcome, genre.
A completely fucked up reinvention of the vampire myth that has nothing to do with sparkling or brooding in high school hallways. These vampires are… not romantic. Okay, they’re a little romantic. In a “this is deeply wrong but I can’t stop reading” kind of way.
Another dark ménage that I’m fairly convinced helped birth the Why Choose movement. Again—you’re welcome. I accept tribute in the form of five-star reviews and compulsive one-clicking…
MMF. Shadow government. Death fighters. Girls as prizes.
That’s it. That’s the description. What more do you need?
Dark academia that absolutely no one asked for. Secret society. Elite boarding school in Vermont. Orgies.
I wrote this because I wanted to and literally no other reason.
Two-dick aliens. Space princesses who glow during climax. And then literally explode.
I cannot stress enough that this is a real series I wrote with my real brain and sold with my real name attached. (Well, THIN-ly veiled pen name so…)
Semi-autobiographical. Based on the day I turned 18. My real friends show up as characters. Older man corrupts an ‘innocent’ young girl.
Except I tamed it down. So I wouldn’t come off as a cry for help that’s twenty-five years too late. Ha.
Blonde twelve-year-old assassins. Wearing braces. Giving relationship advice to fully unhinged grown men.
I don’t know what to tell you. It made sense at the time.
SO WHAT MAKES STORY FODDER DIFFERENT?
Well… all of those books have dark elements—trafficking, abuse, mind control, shadow governments, literal alien biology. But those things are plot devices. They’re the background. They’re things that happen TO the characters.
Story Fodder is different because Scarletta’s mental state IS the plot.
No one is pulling strings behind the scenes. No shadow government. No secret society orchestrating her life. There’s just… her. Making her own decisions. Trying to figure out what she actually wants versus what she’s been told she should want.
And honestly? I don’t even think that’s mental illness. I think being confused about societal expectations in 2026 is just… inevitable.
Scarletta isn’t broken because of some external trauma. She’s broken because the world keeps telling her how to feel about things and none of it matches what’s actually happening inside her head.
That’s the most honest thing I’ve ever written.
Which probably IS a cry for help, now that I think about it.

I have to say ENEMIES TO LOVERS is my absolute favorite because it comes with so many ‘fight’ opportunities and writing ARGUMENTS is my ABSOLUTE FAV! I love back and forth dialogue. It absolutely writes itself and on audiobook, in duet or full-cast narration, it’s amazing!
My second would be TRAUMA BONDING. For the same reason. I love writing sad scenes A LOT. I love getting to the root of the problem and that connection moment between the MMC and the FMC.

I absolutely had no intention of liking these characters. lol It was just ‘a Christmas” story – and then it wasn’t. But Dead Daze is up there with one of my favs. Such an AMAZING GLOW-UP!

Well thank you this perked me up especially as it’s my birthday today! Middle age here I come! TBH I like things as dark as they can get so everything you have described basically. I also like my characters clever and underestimated. So my main tropes are mafia, Dark, Academy, Paranormal enemies to lovers with twists that make you think reverse harem the spicer the better.

It’s too hard to choose! I love Touch Her and Die. Us against the world kinda stuff. Not a fan of relationship angst. I like the characters to be solid. The darker the better with the storyline. It’s unpredictable and keeps things interesting. I love the new merch 🥰

Arranged Marriage, Captivity, Obsessive Anti-hero, Touch and I Will Unalive You….oh the choices are numerous and wonderfully delightful in dark romance! A really good enemies-to-lovers with fighting, trying to mentally resist, and hate driven sexy times in an arranged marriage with a dangerous, killing machine, obsessive anti-hero with some “Daddy” energy thrown in! Longest run on sentence in history. I got carried away with the possibilities. Lol…jk…kinda….well not really…

Geezer sometimes with the arguments in the head you could have made a great lawyer (I know, too boring) instead of a mad scientist. I think I like the MFM or MMFM (cuz more than 3 is just a waste) where they are all damaged somehow and bring their own broken pieces to fill in the others that will make them all whole. Don’t get me wrong, I love the strong female the best, even if she doesn’t realize it in the beginning because, yeah, she’s damaged
Dark + Enemies-to-Lovers + Obsessive Protective MMC. I love when they start at war but end in fierce, all-consuming loyalty. If he’s morally gray but would burn the world down for her? Sold. Ohhh!!! And throw in some twisty psychological mindfuckery all the better!

Mine has always been, Enemies to Lovers! I’m with you on the arguments that you have so much fun writing. I like to see what the characters will choose to argue about and how they learn more about each other and move pass what has “irked” them in order to grow into the “power couple” that they will hopefully get to become!
At this moment my fav is second chance with dark men. Nit sure that’s what it’s called but that’s how I describe it.
