(Or: Why Story Fodder Might Be the Most Unhinged Thing I’ve Written, and That’s Saying Something)

People keep asking me about Story Fodder.

Specifically: “JA, is this the darkest thing you’ve written?”

And I have to lol. Because mo-fos. MO-FOS. Let me take you on a little journey through my backlist…

EXHIBIT A: Three, Two, One

Dark ménage with a ‘throw-your-kindle-ending’ back when that was literally not a thing. I wrote this in 2015 and Goodreads acted like I’d invented a new crime. Two men. One woman. Absolutely zero apologies. You’re welcome, genre.

EXHIBIT B: American Vampires

A completely fucked up reinvention of the vampire myth that has nothing to do with sparkling or brooding in high school hallways. These vampires are… not romantic. Okay, they’re a little romantic. In a “this is deeply wrong but I can’t stop reading” kind of way.

EXHIBIT C: Taking Turns

Another dark ménage that I’m fairly convinced helped birth the Why Choose movement. Again—you’re welcome. I accept tribute in the form of five-star reviews and compulsive one-clicking…

EXHIBIT D: Sick Heart

MMF. Shadow government. Death fighters. Girls as prizes.

That’s it. That’s the description. What more do you need?

EXHIBIT E: The Dirty Ones

Dark academia that absolutely no one asked for. Secret society. Elite boarding school in New Hampshire. Orgies.

I wrote this because I wanted to and literally no other reason.

EXHIBIT F: Harem Station

Two-dick aliens. Space princesses who glow during climax. And then literally explode.

I cannot stress enough that this is a real series I wrote with my real brain and sold with my real name attached. (Well, THIN-ly veiled pen name so…)

EXHIBIT G: Eighteen

Semi-autobiographical. Based on the day I turned 18. My real friends show up as characters. Older man corrupts an ‘innocent’ young girl.

Except I tamed it down. So I wouldn’t come off as a cry for help that’s twenty-five years too late. Ha.

EXHIBIT H: The Company Series

Blonde twelve-year-old assassins. Wearing braces. Giving relationship advice to fully unhinged grown men.

I don’t know what to tell you. It made sense at the time.

SO WHAT MAKES STORY FODDER DIFFERENT?

Well… all of those books have dark elements—trafficking, abuse, mind control, shadow governments, literal alien biology. But those things are plot devices. They’re the background. They’re things that happen TO the characters.

Story Fodder is different because Scarletta’s mental state IS the plot.

No one is pulling strings behind the scenes. No shadow government. No secret society orchestrating her life. There’s just… her. Making her own decisions. Trying to figure out what she actually wants versus what she’s been told she should want.

And honestly? I don’t even think that’s mental illness. I think being confused about societal expectations in 2026 is just… inevitable.

Scarletta isn’t broken because of some external trauma. She’s broken because the world keeps telling her how to feel about things and none of it matches what’s actually happening inside her head.

That’s the most honest thing I’ve ever written.

Which probably IS a cry for help, now that I think about it.

Oh well. 🖤

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DARK ROMANCE TROPE COMBINATION?

I have to say ENEMIES TO LOVERS is my absolute favorite because it comes with so many ‘fight’ opportunities and writing ARGUMENTS is my ABSOLUTE FAV! I love back and forth dialogue. It absolutely writes itself and on audiobook, in duet or full-cast narration, it’s amazing!

My second would be TRAUMA BONDING. For the same reason. I love writing sad scenes A LOT. I love getting to the root of the problem and that connection moment between the MMC and the FMC.

    1. Enemies to lovers because I THRIVE on the tension. I need all the hate. All the frustration. It makes it all the more delicious, when they give in. Also either touch them and d1e, or a good ‘who did this to you/who hurt you’ moment because then I know Carnage is about to ensue. And I’m a little unhinged, so if my dark books don’t have carnage, then how will I cope😂

    1. I absolutely had no intention of liking these characters. lol It was just ‘a Christmas” story – and then it wasn’t. But Dead Daze is up there with one of my favs. Such an AMAZING GLOW-UP!

  27. Well thank you this perked me up especially as it’s my birthday today! Middle age here I come! TBH I like things as dark as they can get so everything you have described basically. I also like my characters clever and underestimated. So my main tropes are mafia, Dark, Academy, Paranormal enemies to lovers with twists that make you think reverse harem the spicer the better.

  29. It’s too hard to choose! I love Touch Her and Die. Us against the world kinda stuff. Not a fan of relationship angst. I like the characters to be solid. The darker the better with the storyline. It’s unpredictable and keeps things interesting. I love the new merch 🥰

  31. Arranged Marriage, Captivity, Obsessive Anti-hero, Touch and I Will Unalive You….oh the choices are numerous and wonderfully delightful in dark romance! A really good enemies-to-lovers with fighting, trying to mentally resist, and hate driven sexy times in an arranged marriage with a dangerous, killing machine, obsessive anti-hero with some “Daddy” energy thrown in! Longest run on sentence in history. I got carried away with the possibilities. Lol…jk…kinda….well not really…

  70. Geezer sometimes with the arguments in the head you could have made a great lawyer (I know, too boring) instead of a mad scientist. I think I like the MFM or MMFM (cuz more than 3 is just a waste) where they are all damaged somehow and bring their own broken pieces to fill in the others that will make them all whole. Don’t get me wrong, I love the strong female the best, even if she doesn’t realize it in the beginning because, yeah, she’s damaged

I like to see what the characters will choose to argue about and how they learn more about each other and move pass what has “irked” them in order to grow into the “power couple” that they will hopefully get to become!

Give me tension, sharp banter, and two people who have to be near each other while pretending they don’t care — the slow burn and accidental vulnerability gets me every time. Add a little trauma bonding and emotional hurt/comfort, and I’m completely sold.

I’ve recently discovered that masked men, morally black, SK, stalker, but with a lot of unhinged humor is like the best thing ever, and now I’m concerned for my own mental health and think I probably need serious therapy except I need that money for more books. It’s a choice, but I will accept the consequences of my actions, unlike the men in the books I’ve been reading.

However, me in real life will absolutely punch that same man in the throat. It’s just the brat in me. 😉 But enemies to lovers….I love the push pull dynamic of will he or will she or won’t they. I love the drop when they finally submit to all the feels.

Full of suspense and twists. Stalker, Mafia, Motorcycle Club, forced proximity, found family, stabby FMC, MF, MMF, MFM. The list is endless because it’s hard for me to pick just one trope or micro-trope. As long as there’s a HEA, I am along for the ride.

    For me it all started with Rook and Ronin back in 2020 when I got back into reading and first started listening to audiobooks and it just spiraled from there. Dark romance and romantic suspense become my favorite genres and you introduced me to both. Thank you for that and for sharing your brilliant mind with us.

I love the touch her and die but I think that falls into the hunted to worshipped trope. It falls into a lot of them actually. That’s what I need, a touch her and die type love. My favourite type of books, especially when they are filled with secret plots, the truth is never what it seems.   257. In short, I love dark in morally grey, traumatic past, with secrets revealed in subtext or in the end.

    I prefer the darkness to be in the background setting and the world the characters live in. The environment/society is so dark that the main characters are forced to be morally grey in order to survive. The characters have to navigate and engage with the rest of the world while balancing or fighting for the centre relationship. There’ll be outside pressure that threatens the relationship or the safety of either one of the main characters.

  284. For dark romances, my tropes are possessive protector, stalker and serial killer. Someone who watches and waits, taking care of or taking out the people who have hurt the woman he loves, there’s nothing that he wouldn’t do to ensure that she comes to him or has no choice but to see him as the only option in her time of need. And she is completely unaware that he’s doing all of this. That just makes it all the more intense when she learns everything that he’s done for her and she has to decide if she runs or runs to him.

  308. I’m all about that dark friends-enemies-lovers vibe. I love when the characters have a real history. Like they were close or had a childhood crush that went wrong and then something happened that made them genuinely hate each other. If there’s some tragic or intense moment that forces them to face what they’re actually feeling. The more complicated and messy the journey from hate the more I’m hooked on it.

Tough to not choose a laundry list of tropes, but I would say, found family, why choose with a real MM romance in it (bonus points if it also has an FF romance in it that is not soft and cushiony), friends to lovers (or teammates, crime partners, what have you), bi-awakening, fantastical element (vampires, elves, fae, idk ghosts?).   363. I want the captor/captive dynamic blended with a force proximity, stalker, BDSM, enemies to lovers ownership with a touch of psychological revenge monster in the mix. I want the guy who lurks in the shadows, watching her intimately and invading her spaces. She can follow his scent in her apartment and hear his breath by here pillow when she touches herself in the dark, yet she cannot see him. He makes her crave rough capture, being bound, and the pleasurable misery against her will … like being brutally ravished on a pile of rose petals and thorns under the house – savage, hungry and then gone – until the next time. There is some personal connection to her past, some debt or jilted moment in time that she can’t figure out and he hates that he’s obsessed with her. He toys with her like a cat with a mouse, yet he finds he wants to pet her and keep her forever like a most cherished prize. No mafia, no club spectacle with rooms and costumes or leash with safe words … just that brutally uncomfortable loss of control and the violent emotion that follows. Being owned without consent, the full force of his weight, with ropes around her wrists and ankles, held down and made to submit your soul.
