Writing Tip Wednesday – Hooks and Endings

JA Huss

Welcome to video three of The Perfect Story. This video is about hooking your reader and writing a great ending and concludes basic story structure.  From this point on I’ll talk mostly about craft, so if you still think you need some help in structure, check out those books below. Here are the links to the previous writing videos in case you missed them. (and excuse my typos/mistakes… I literally made this video last night at midnight)

Middles and Scenes
Hooks and Endings
Sex Scenes
Literary Devices

If you’re interested in learning more about story structure, these three books have been really helpful for me.

The Plot Whisperer” by Martha Alderson
Story Engineering” by Larry Brooks
The Story Grid” by Shawn Coyne

As always, if you don’t want to remember to check back every two weeks to watch the new video, you can always follow my blog using the form below and I’ll send the post right to your email. And if you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment and I’ll answer your question as soon as I see it.

  1. Is it acceptable to have more than a single hook? Like maybe four, all interconnected (but each one hooky enough in strength to actually stand on its own in pure terms).

  2. Five year plan Bitches! Thank you again J.A. I learn something new every time I watch. And if you ever did decide to sell these courses you would be well within your right. I have so many publishing schools emailing and offering “free” courses that is pretty much fluff B.S for an hour, before they ask you to pay the low, low price of six ga-jillion bucks a month for their insider secrets. *eye roll*. For that alone I have sooo much respect for you, for taking time out to do this, while writing fast (you must be a cyborg) and killing the Best sellers lists. Much love!

  3. Thank you, and thanks again. Your videos on story craft are the bomb. Most succinct explanation and demonstration of plot points and everything else, even above the paid stuff, and even for my genre Urban Fantasy. And this is after reading story engineering again which is also very very good at explaining purpose. Thanks for your recommendation of that book otherwise I would not have gone back and re-read it.

  4. Thank you so much for this!! These videos have been so helpful. I am now a reformed pantster. I’m still struggling with a few crisis points because I’m only writing a novella. I don’t want to pack too much into one book. I think this simplified it for me. #amwriting

  5. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I’m learning so much, and I have to admit, you have the most intriguing graphics that I’m always curious what the next one will be. Wherever you get them, they are gold!

  6. love the bird in the background. I had one that always screamed– only when I was talking to someone… no idea what his deal was, but it was both funny and annoying at the same time:) thanks for a good skip the fluffy warm fuzzies, information:)
