The Mister Series Trailer – The Match Cover – And a Top Ten List

RomanceSCROLL DOWN for the SECRET GIVEAWAY!
I have so much stuff coming up I had to squeeze this blog post in this week or I would run out of days next week! As you might know Mr. Mysterious (fourth book in the series) is releasing October 12. In addition I just made the Mister book trailer and the Mr. Match cover (whoohoo, here comes Oliver Shrike!) and next week I have a giveaway, an order form, and a new series announcement that will blow your mind.
So today you’re getting three things in one! The Mister trailer, the Match cover, and the Top Ten Things That Influenced Me When Writing The Mister Series!
I’ll start with the Top Ten. Are you ready?
10. The Denver Tech Center
You only need to read one or two books from me to figure out pretty quick that most of my stories take place here in Colorado where I live. I’ve used Denver a lot (321, Tragic, Social Media). I’ve used Fort Collins a lot (almost whole Rook & Ronin series). I’ve used Grand Lake once (Rock), Vail once (Taut – Ford), the Eastern Plains (Come Back, Social Media), and now the Denver Tech Center for the second time. The first time I used the Tech Center was in Anarchy Found. The Tech Center is like a mini city outside of Denver. We are so weird here. We have all this land surrounding Denver so, you know, if we don’t like our airport or our downtown buildings, we just move some cows around and build it again. The Centennial Airport (which is where all my billionaires fly in and out of the Denver area) is also in the Tech Center. 🙂
Both Ellie and Mr. Perfect live in the Tech Center. It looks like a very green downtown and it’s very busy during the day. But most people don’t want to live there. It’s a place to work. So this is a telling character trait for Ellie and Perfect. They live where they work.
9. This Cool Slide
If you’ve read Mr. Perfect you know that Ellie works at a huge tech company that takes their hipster fun seriously. I actually got a review saying this workplace is stupid because no office like that exists. That person has obviously never watched the show Silicon Valley. Or seen Google. Right? Ellie works in a place that keeps her perpetually young. It’s a place that takes creativity seriously and the main focal point in the main building is this slide. Yes, THIS slide. I borrowed it from directly from a Canadian company called Corus Entertainment. 🙂
8. Brown University
Of course, just about everything I write about Brown is fictional. The “rape-case” is based off a very famous incident at another university that really didn’t need to be reminded of what happened ten years ago.
8. Borrego Springs and the Salton Sea (California)
The desert out near Borrego has it’s pretty moments, but they don’t typically take place in August. 😉 And the Salton Sea is exactly what I described in the book. A desolate waste that was once a thriving beach community in the Fifties and Sixties. I think it’s telling that Nolan Delaney (Mr. Romantic) decided to build his five-star resort out there in the desert. I write about California a lot too. I lived in So Cal for about seven years so it’s a place I know. Write what you know, right?
7. The Exuma Cays
For Mr. Corporate I needed a place that was close to a major American airport, but where illegal things could happen quite easily. The Exuma Cays are very close to Florida and even though lots of people go to the Bahamas, it takes a little more effort to boat your way out to the Cays. These islands are the Tahiti of the Caribbean. I don’t think you need any words to describe this place. Just a picture will do.
6. Providence, Rhode Island
Providence is where Ivy (Mrs. Romantic) lives and is also the home of Brown University. When she and Nolan have their “fantasy” date, it starts out with dinner at the Waterman Grille. I actually made a mistake when I envisioned Ivy’s townhome. It seems there are no townhouses in the historic area with large patios to sunbathe. But I left it in anyway. Fiction, right? 😉
6. Martha’s Vineyard
Or MV, as the locals call it. 🙂 Pretentious, exclusive, luxury. That’s all I was aiming for when I came up with a place for Nolan’s family home. I am noticing a trend with Mr. Romantic. I did a lot of research for this place and the reason why is because I’ve never been to New England. I wanted an East Coast setting (prep schools, and Ivy League, and Old Money). And while I grew up in Cleveland, I have never managed to get up that way. This isn’t the house I used to envision Mr. Romantic’s mansion, but it’s very close. That house was just a real estate listing.

5. Malibu, CA
Perfect LA area beach town. Outside the city, plagued with traffic problems to get there, houses so close together you can jump from roof to roof. Who doesn’t have a vision of Malibu in their heads already? This is where Mr. Mysterious calls home in his book. It’s just a setting ripe for the imagination, right? People with that kind of money can do a lot. There really are houses that rent for $200,000 a month in the summer. Can you even imagine? lol. I can, but it’s my job, I’m a writer. I deal in fantasy. This was the house that I envisioned for Paxton. I took some liberties with the inside, of course, but for the most part I used that exact place.

4. The Rape Case
It’s based on a true story and I’m not going to name it because I promised myself I wouldn’t. The boys were innocent. 100% innocent. So there’s no need to use their real-life publicity for my book series. I didn’t put this as Number One because it’s really just a sub-plot in the series. Yes, it happened to them ten years ago, but they moved on. It’s the past. So it’s was never the number one influence on where this story was/is going. It’s just part of who the Misters are.
3. Racehorses
Paxton Vance (AKA Mr. Mysterious) was raised on a Kentucky Thoroughbred breeding farm by his single-parent mother. He buys her a house in Del Mar, which is quickly sold off to Nolan (Mr. Romantic) so Pax can have some cash flow. But it’s still his house and it comes up several times in the series. The horses don’t come into play until the actual Mr. Mysterious book, but the racetrack, and the house, are major features in Mr. Romantic. The breeding farm is just a cool place to be a rich kid. Very old money. Very old bloodlines. Very old family. Again, I took the Del Mar house right out of the real estate pages. I took some liberties on the outside, but most of the inside was exact. Anyone who knows horses understands they are nothing but a money suck. The money that goes into thoroughbreds is obscene. It’s a point I needed to make with Mr. Mysterious’s background.
2. The Shrike Family
Yes, it almost always comes back to Rook & Ronin, doesn’t it? Spencer Shrike is the patriarch of the Shrike kids in the Mister series. These kids were not part of the Rook & Ronin story, in fact, except for Five and Princess Rory, they only appear in the very last novella, Happily Ever After. Cindy, our heroine in Mr. Mysterious, is the baby. At only six months old in that book, she is already commanding attention. Spencer’s other half–Veronica, Ron the Bomb, Vaughn, or Bombshell, as we like to call her–is a former tattoo artist, former body art model, and all-around badd-ass chick. Mr. Match, the final book, is about Oliver Shrike in the Mister Series. The only son of Spencer and Veronica (who have a shitload of little Princesses), he was just eighteen when he got caught up in a rape charge at Brown that would change his life. And little did he know then, just how deep he was involved.
You do not have to read any other books of mine to read the Mister Series. People always try and say you do, but listen, you do not. These kids, who are now adults in the Mister series, are NOT IN the Rook & Ronin series except in a very outer edge of the very end. They dont’ matter. Their parent’s don’t matter in this Mister story. There is no Company cross-over (for you James, Sasha, and Harper fans). There is no Merc crossover (Meet Me In The Dark).
BUT – if you want to read it I’m offering it up for FREE right now. The first THREE BOOKS in the Rook & Ronin Series (Tragic, Manic, and Panic) about 800 paperback pages, are all FREE and you can get them right here.
1. The Men
Mr. Perfect, Mr. Romantic, Mr. Corporate, Mr. Mysterious, Mr. Match, and Fucking Five Aston. These guys are the most important thing about this series. The characters trump everything in romance. Everything. And I fell a little in love with all of them. I hope you do too! At the very least, they are easy on the eyes. 😉
