    1. Always open international. I admit, it’s painful to pay $40 for shipping to Australia, but it’s worth it. I have a ton of fans down under. 🙂 And they REALLY appreciate the international giveaways. However, when I sell signed books online (which I only do occasionally) I don’t always open it INT because I hate the process of mailing them. I have sent books to Russia, Argentina, Mexico, all over Europe (including countries I’ve never heard of) Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Nigeria, and many, many more.

      1. Ha! So I had a general question about giveaways. I’m just wrapping up my first book blitz and I’ve had a ton of people follow me on twitter and like my Facebook page, but I’m pretty sure it’s only on account of the giveaway running, because I’ve had next to no increase in sales. How would you go about converting these people into real fans? I did do things a little backwards, because I’m just getting started and plan to implement your training for my next release. I’m doing my best to engage with them, but if you had any other advice, I’d appreciate it. Sorry for the long post…

        1. Real fans come from writing great books. Marketing only works if the book is worth talking about. So the giveaway is just to get people interested. You come up with something creative and original, then sit back and wait for people to take a chance on you. If you write a great book, people talk about it and then you make more sales.

My PA scheduled my first takeover for Feb 12, so I’m planning the giveaway based on your suggestions. 🙂 I did take notes on your giveaway when it was live, but I didn’t notice how long it lasted. Is there an optimum time for the length of a giveaway? I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s video!

    1. i don’t think length of giveaway matters. I do them all different lengths of time. For a takeover I run them for 24 pus so people on the other side of the planet can enter as well. 🙂

  7. Hey, I’m just now getting to this series and I LOVE IT. Thanks for doing this. My question is that Facebook has some guidelines as well as the state you live in about giveaways and asking people to do things in order to win. I actually saw one indie jump another indie because she was doing a giveaway and asked people to like and share. The other indie said its illegal and blah blah blah. You have any thoughts or guidance on this? It makes sense to me to ask people to do something in return but holy hell the fallout sometimes from others is incredible (I know, I shouldn’t care).

    1. Kristi – there is a workaround for everything. FB cannot control what you do OFF Facebook. So you can try that. Do the giveaway on your blog. Also, there’s working to sue to get past their rule. I’m generally not a rule-breaker. I like to be on the up and up and when I can’t, I like to find a legal workaround. But lots of authors ask for a straight share. I wouldn’t personally do that. Just find a way to ask without asking. 😉
