Welcome to an entire month of Top 5 Tips for Authors!

ABSOLUTELY FREE!

Every day this month my friends and I will bring you a new set of Top 5 Tips to help you along on your author journey. 2017 was a year of change in the Indie author world for sure. So many happenings. So many new things to learn. So many old things that didn’t quite do what you’d hoped. Well, every day is a new day. And every year is a new year. So we hope that this month’s worth of tips will get you the kick start you need to make 2018 your best yet and please feel free to ask questions and leave comments.

Next up on the blog is my friend Blair Babylon. Blair is an award-winning, USA Today-bestselling author who used to publish literary fiction. Because professional reviews of her other fiction usually included the caveat that there was too much deviant sex and too much interesting plot, she decided to abandon all literary pretensions, let her freak flag fly, and write hot, sexy, suspenseful romance.

DON’T FORGET TO ENTER BLAIR’S GIVEAWAY AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST OR ON HER BLOG HERE!

I’ll admit, I stole most of this from Julie Huss’s amazing video series, The Free Marketing Course. If you haven’t watched the whole series yet, quit wasting your time and get thy ass over there.

But here are 5 tips to get you started.

  1. Define “Giveaway.”

A “giveaway” is where you set up a raffle for people to enter. They can win prizes from you for entering.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: To enter, they have to do things that benefit you and help you accomplish your goal.

If you want to donate to charity, do that, but your giveaway is not that place.

Examples of “Ways To Enter”:

Sign up for your mailing list
Like and Retweet one of your tweets about your new book
Like and Retweet another one
Follow you on Twitter-Instagram-YouTube-Facebook-Snapchat-Pinterest-Bookbub-Amazon-Blog.
Watch a video ad for your new book on YouTube and like it
Like, Comment, and Share a post about your new book from your Facebook page
Pin a picture of your new book’s cover
Comment on a blog post that you blogged
Take a survey that you put up
Like, Comment , and Share a post on Instagram
Like and Retweet about the Rafflecopter

  1. Set up a giveaway.

I prefer Rafflecopter. I’ve heard King Sumo is good, too. Setting Rafflecopter up is easy.

For Rafflecopter, I have the $43/month one because it has the things that I consider most important. The free one only allows you 50 entries, and that should top out in about 5 seconds if you do it right.

Here’s a little one that I’m running through Rafflecopter right now: http://smarturl.it/blairgiveaway?IQid=JAHB

  1. Use graphics for the prizes.

Like this one:

Using pictures of the prize packages gains you many, many, many more entries than just listing them. You should do that. You can slap these together in Powerpoint, Gimp, or something like that.

  1. Give away good prizes.

Gift cards are nifty. Everyone likes gift cards. But give away things that are special to you. Make up shirts that refer to your books. I write about a sex club called The Devilhouse, so I made “staff” tee shirts that people seem to really like. I also made Devilhouse staff coffee mugs. (“No rest for the wicked,” LOL.) Signed paperbacks are always good. A whole lot of people read on ereaders, tablets, or phones now, so paperbacks are collectables.

  1. Publicize that puppy everywhere.

Send a newsletter to your mailing list.

Slap it up on your Facebook page.

Link to it from your profile.

Tweet about it.

If you do a blog tour, give the giveaway link to your coordinator or send it out to your bloggers to include in your promo. (This one is huge.)

Do takeovers of Facebook groups, and put it up LAST. (Otherwise people scurry off to do all the things and don’t come back.)
